Holi aayi re .....

" Holi ke din dil khil jaatey hain rangon mein rang mil jaaty hain ...... "
and
" giley shikwey bhool kar doston dushman bhi galey mil jaatey hain ...."

If  only  Dushman , the enemy ,  could be embraced with love and faith once again , washing away  the colours of hurt and pettiness in the outpour of Holy colours and burning anger and hatred in the rising flames of The Holika , how beautiful and clean  would the next morning  dawn

After all the purpose of Holika dahen is to  remember the triumph of good over evil , and the celebration of this victory is carried farther with  splashing of colours as spring sets in signifying warmth and new beginnings ....

Is it  so difficult for a new  beginning to be made in the right direction ?
The colours of happiness and celebration would be far more joyous and true if  the colours of peace and love are added too :-)

All the best
Wishing everyone Happy Holi ....

Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan

" Jai Jawaan , Jai Kisaan  " was  not just a slogan given by one of our most loved Prime Ministers , it also till date remains a token of the respect and affection that the Nation has for  our soldiers and farmers .
And note the fact that Jawaan comes  before Kisaan .
This  is not merely for the sake of rhyming or a coincidence .
It is because , it is the soldier who endangers his life so that the Nation feels safe and secure , and as a result the entire Nations runs smoothly .

For year and years we have been rightly proud of these two important contributors to our National progress and  pride.

Hence the BJP 's Prime Ministerial candidate gave the Nation a rude shock and jolted even the silent onlookers like me  from slumber to awakening.
What  the hell is this , I ask myself .
Is this the man who is being  advertised and  marketed  by almost the entire media as perhaps the greatest leader of our times ?
And a whole bunch of so called " loyal  and non-corrupt "  Indians are presenting and endorsing him as a strong  man and a world class leader , who keeps his word and delivers on his promises ?

Is this that great man ?

He has blundered with History , geography , general knowledge , languages etc etc .... but blundering with National Pride ?
We , and I mean every Indian , and I mean truly patriotic humane  Indian , must sit up and  question  this  insensitive creature as to how could he ever say that a  trader takes more risk in life  for national progress than a soldier ??? How could he ever equate the two  of them ?
Does he even know what a soldier does for the Country ?
Never in my life have I heard a  person   utter such   indecorous words for the selfless sons  of  the Country ,  who put duty to their Motherland before everything else.
They endanger their own lives and put their families behind them for the safety and honour of  The  Country and are forever there to help  all their fellow countrymen in such difficult times as Natural and man made calamities .
What do we give them in return ?
The least we can do is respect their spirit and honour their sacrifices .

The chaai walaas know this ..... but  sadly the  BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate does not seem to know even this .

Promote Love , Peace will follow .....

Pyaar wo ehsaas hai jo dilo'N mein
Dhadkan ki tarah rehta  hai

Noor ka wo lazawaal chashma hai
Jis kii paakeezgi mein har gunaah beh jaaye

Pyaar jihaad hai , araam nahi
Pyaar  farmaan e Khuda hai , haraam nahii

Pyaar ke geet har gali har aangan  mein guungunaao
Nafraton ki haveliyan  todd ke baahar aao ....

Happy Valentines Day to all

Be intolerant to violence

Violence has come to be accepted at most places ... And at some places expected too !!!

It is disturbing to note that this nearly frenzied deterioration of human values does not seem to disturb the masses.

My generation does seem astonished at the "decaying" morals among the youth but it has mostly to do about what they wear and how they socialize ...
There is hardly any realization, leave alone surprise or remorse, as to how hurtfully violence has rotted our lives over the years

Let us be honest.
Is the present volatile situation really so sudden an irruption ?

I recently read this ...
"Mark Twain described his mother as a genuinely good person, whose soft heart pitied even Satan, but who had no doubt about the legitimacy of slavery, because in years of living in antebellum Missouri she had never heard any sermon opposing slavery, but only countless sermons preaching that slavery was God's will. "

Surely the present cannot be viewed in isolation.
Is it any wonder then, that all of today's violence is being justified as a reaction to some incidents that happened in history hundred and so many more years back.

Our upbringing is such that we grow up making violence some sort of a divine virtue
In every culture and religion across the globe violence has been described as an embodiment of bravery and valour.

Everyone is in awe of it. There is an unprecedented adulation (and even thirst) for weapons
We have made killing an accepted part of societal existence by meekly surrendering to a pathetic and very often corrupt social system that encourages anarchy under various pretexts

And this is not all
There is another more distressing fact.
Violence is actually endorsed and glorified because of the "virtues" that one has been inadvertently taught to associate with it !!!

Some time back a little boy was hit by an elder school mate in the school premises so badly that the the younger lad ended up with fractures and bruises
The parents of the younger boy were obviously upset.
The least they wanted is an honest apology from the erring boy

But nothing worthwhile happened. The older boy comes from an influential "well connected" family
And the school authorities dare not ruffle them

Today's children are tomorrow's adults.
From their earliest memories some will have a sense of insecurity while some others are pampered into believing that they can get away with murder.

Poverty is not always about money
This kind of implied unequal and unjust practices also add up to making the divide between the "haves" and "have-nots" that much wider

Remember those innocent stories of kings and queens that Granny told or those of the super heroes that we read in comics ?
Think again ... They were after all not so innocent because they have unwittingly , yet very impressively reiterated and established the myth that violence is sacred !!!

In recent times there are films and television serials that are generously feeding the masses of all ages enormous amounts of violence and provoking the youth to resort to violent measures as a solution to fighting injustice and corruption

So then why are we so shocked to see explosions of extreme intolerance all around us?

"Might is right" was never more pronounced and never had the masses accepted it so conveniently as it has been in the present times ...

It is high time that one condemns violence in ALL its manifestations because War and Violence have already become a "noble" expression of "patriotism and religiosity".

Normal people everywhere on this Planet can be brainwashed and "converted" into (becoming) monstrous psychopaths with "promises" of great honour and rewards in this world and in the hereafter
They are then unleashed upon fellow human beings to kill and rape "the other" in the name of religion and country

Therefore the question is :
" Can killing and violence be justified as being sacred and patriotic , may be "under a specific condition "? "

Before one can answer that , there arise a couple of counter questions :
"Have all the religions of the world not preached harmony and peaceful existence?
And has Violence ever solved anything ?
Has Violence ever brought about Peace anywhere ... ANYWHERE at all ?"

So here is a huge paradox
Every religion most ironically permits a certain regulated dose of violence , of course under "special circumstances"
This permission has been manipulated by vested interests innumerable times
Therefore,
"Fear leaders and those prepared to die for ( their ) "truth" and "faith ", for as a rule they make others die with them, often before them, and at times even instead of them."

It also makes sense to remember American theoretical physicist Steven Weinberg's famous quote :
" With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil — that takes religion. "

Our own Sahir Ludhianvi has said :
"Jung To Khud Hi Ek Mas'ala Hai Jung Kya Mas'alon Ka Hal Degi
Aag Aur Khoon Aaj Bakhshe gi Bhookh Aur Eh'tiyaj Kal De gi
Is Liye Ae Sharif Insaanoen Jung Talti Rahe To Behtar Hai....."

So if violence, perpetuated by vested interests, has NEVER solved a problem, and even the smallest act of violence often builds up a chain of violent irruptions in the future, then what is it good for ?
Can it ever end ???

Since "Every problem has a solution." there must be a way out of this turmoil too

The most important first step is to say an emphatic "NO" to violence of EVERY kind.
It is also essential to accept (and publicly propagate) that violence under any pretext is wrong, wrong ... and nothing but WRONG.

This should be followed by strongly inculcating non-violent behaviour in the children from their earliest years.
To bring a change in the mindset of the ordinary masses , we will need , like The Dalai Lama has suggested :
"more peace makers , healers , restorers , story tellers and lovers of all kinds "

In a civilized world, there will certainly be neither any place for pre-historic sword-wielding barbarism nor the ultra sophisticated warfare promoted by scientific discoveries and inventions

So we have a long way to go ...

New Year is here ..... What's on your mind ?

Starting this New Year , I wish and plan and  resolve to write .
Yes! Write ....
Neither on  my phone nor on the computer .... I hope to revive my age old hobby of writing letters to my loved ones . Just like I used to do in the past , much before e mailing and later Facebooking and now WhatsApping / Viber-ing etc etc took over .

While I agree that the present modes of communication are very quick and convenient , there is an intoxicating  charm , a regal luxury  in writing  with your own hands  ,.
I think one's imagination also works better , wanders far and wide and makes writing a pleasure when one has a pen in hand and a paper in front  ....
Then going out to post it  is another wonderful experience , ( walking is good for health ... isn't it ?  and believe me , for a free flight to your dream world too ) ..... !!!
And then waiting for the reply .... ???
Well in the present scenario expecting people to spare time for such an ancient excercise would be certainly  asking for too much .

Hence no expectations ....
Only  selfless affectionate wishes for Prosperous , Happy , Fulfilling , Successful , Beautiful  Future to all

Happy New Year .... God bless

Diwaali Mubaarak

This woman , a stranger , climbing the staircase showed her surprise as Sunanda and I exchanged our usual goodbyes and in addition wished each other "Diwali Mubaarak" too .
Indeed  for those who stay in their cocooned webs of self centred existence , "Khudahaafiz  .... aur  Diwaaali sab ko Mubaaarak ho .... ! " in the same breath must come as an hugely outlandish expression !!!

I have had the honour to witness this expression many times.

Thinking of  such well-insulated areas where persons belonging to one community are completely unaware of  people in another neighbouring community ,  in times of   a globalised world  would have amused me had it been a figment of my imagination   .... but it is sadly  not so .....

There is this middle aged woman , Sunanda , who my family knows from the time we were children .There was a time when she was an integral part of the fabric that cosntituted my family outfit. Everyday she would come with her mother and help my mother in the kitchen , while her mother did the jhaadoo-bartan.
Then for a while we drifted away into separate spaces.

But the moods of Destiny are unpredictable ....so once again our paths crossed.
Now she comes over from her home (travelling across Mumbai for an hour and a half) to my place every once in a while .
Her arrival is a big and welcome help as she keeps company to my seventy-five plus Mother while "home-ridden" me slips out , away from the sluggish daily routine , for a long breath of fresh air.....  !!!
I adjust my outings as per Sunanda's schedule .... a film , a play , or just plain awaragardi .... all depends on her presence in my house because I dare not leave Mummy alone

And  this morning as Sunanda was leaving after a three day-stay at my place , we exchanged the usual goodbyes .....and in addition the Diwaali Mubaarak .....

And the starltled look on the face of the woman climbing up the stairs ..... !!!

My Dakiya and his Daak

The Postman is now a rare sight ....

He was that familiar man from an era  long gone by ,  who would bring the news  from far away relatives , riding on a bicycle through the lanes and bylanes of  every city , town and countryside .
He knew all the addresses by heart , most of the times  he personally  knew the people too who resided at those addreses and at times he was allowed to be a part of the news he brought for them

The Post Office was a reservoir of information and the postman was  the person who distributed not just letters , but many a time could help in bringing long lost friends to connect with each other once again .... like it happened a couple of years ago when an elderly online friend of mine had asked me to find a friend of his who he had lost touch over the the years , and had not contacted for close to half a century.... !!!
He had given me the address of fifty years ago.

And YES... ! Astonishingly in a city like Mumabi I could locate that person .....
With the help of The Postman of that lacality.....!!!

But The Postman is now a rare sight .....

No one writes letters these days .... May be a few times in a month we get some business mail or a couple of bills  through postal services  . And hence   this rather heavy envelope which came along in the post some weeks ago , went neglected  untill   I opened it at least two weekends later when I found the time to clear the accumulated " raddi " on my shelf.

It was this envelope , apparently carrying  a load of waste paper inside it , which was to give me the most pleasant surprise in a long time.
As I emptied  the envelope of its  contents I found  greeting cards , book marks and some brochures carrying  information and details about  the sender :
The IMFPA ....  ( The Indian Mouth and Foot Painting Artists )
As I held the amazingly beautiful contents in my hands I felt the deepest sense of respect for the dignified senders.

And then nostalgia gripped me like a hypnotic charmer .....
I struggled to remember all those greeting cards exchanged on birthdays , New Years and festivals ....

When was the last time I had sent (or recieved )  such a card ?
Must have been too long ago because there seemed to be  no connecting link in sight which would put together the present with the past this time .

The diary which contained postal addresses of friends had gone into hiding in the lowest  drawer at the foot of that wooden chest which had not been  touched for ages now ....as if it had never existed.
But inside it  existed a whole world that changing times had tried to kill through neglect.
But surely and thankfully too,  that world  had sustained itself courageously and so beautifully....

Among the pages of that old dusty diary were familiar  paths leading to real places and real people.
I could feel their fragrance . I could feel their affection ....
I had found my dormant Paradise.

This festive season I'm going to let the Postman work a bit more .... because I'm going to send greeting cards to my clan and friends  .... so just wait my dears ....here I come .....
Look for the Dakiya-daak-laya ..... because ...... Zindgi aa rahi hoon main .....  :-) :-) :-) !!!!
